At Agrícola Famosa, logistics is an essential part of the company’s business strategy. It supports the company’s growth, ensures competitiveness in increasingly demanding markets and guarantees that fresh fruit reaches its destinations with quality, predictability and scale.
In the context of the fresh produce agribusiness, especially melon, logistics efficiency has ceased to be a differentiating factor and has become a strategic requirement. Every stage of the operation is designed to integrate production, transportation and shipping in a continuous, secure and highly controlled manner, from the field to the main international markets.
The integration between sales, production, transportation and storage enables faster decision making, reduces bottlenecks and provides greater control of the supply chain. With the support of management systems such as ERP, WMS and TMS, Agrícola Famosa maintains real time visibility of its operations, reduces operating costs and expands its logistics capacity without compromising strict quality standards.
The challenges of logistics in the fresh produce agribusiness
Operating globally with highly perishable products presents specific challenges. Each logistics stage must operate with precision and agility, as any deviation from ideal conditions directly impacts freshness, quality and product shelf life.
Strict maintenance of the cold chain is a critical factor throughout the entire operation. In addition, the distance between production units and consumer markets, often separated by thousands of kilometers and maritime crossings, requires a specialized, reliable and dedicated logistics structure.
In this scenario, planning, predictability and operational control become essential to ensure that the product maintains its attributes from harvest to final delivery.
An unprecedented operation in melon logistics
Agrícola Famosa’s international logistics reaches an unprecedented level in the history of melon. The company operates a service with regular weekly sailings over 37 weeks per season, in addition to an extension of 8 weeks during the off season, a period in which logistics operations rely exclusively on break bulk vessels, ensuring operational continuity and constant presence in international markets.
This model enables a stable and predictable supply throughout almost the entire year, something unprecedented in the segment. The projected volume reaches 250,000 pallets transported per season, supported by a robust structure with more than 3,000 available slots for reefer containers, ensuring flexibility even during periods of high demand.
Domestic logistics: from the field to the ports
Planning is the starting point of Agrícola Famosa’s domestic logistics. The operational flow integrates sales, production, packing house and logistics in a coordinated manner, ensuring that each order is fulfilled within strict quality and deadline standards.
To sustain this scale, the company relies on 105 refrigerated trucks dedicated exclusively to fruit operations, ensuring full cold chain control from origin. Shipping capacity reaches up to 3,000 pallets per day, operating on a 24 hour basis, allowing high turnover, reduced bottlenecks and greater efficiency even during peak production periods.
This continuous flow ensures that the product arrives at the port in ideal conditions, ready for international shipment.
Port of Natal as a strategic logistics hub
One of the pillars of this operation is the lease of the Port of Natal, dedicated to exclusive shipments for Agrícola Famosa. The structure includes specialized labor for fruit operations, ensuring agility, safety and efficiency at every stage of the process.
Operational exclusivity allows for greater logistics control, better synchronization between cargo arrival, storage and shipment, as well as reduced operational risks. This model strengthens supply chain reliability and expands the operation’s response capacity.
International logistics and maritime transportation
Transit times reflect the efficiency of this logistics structure:
8 days between Natal and Spain
11 days between Natal and the Netherlands
13 days between Natal and England
These competitive transit times ensure that melons reach their destinations with a high level of freshness, preserved quality and extended shelf life, meeting the requirements of European retail and consumers.
Maritime operations with exclusive dedication
Maritime operations are supported by contracts with shipping lines under an exclusive and fully dedicated regime to Agrícola Famosa S.A.’s operations. This model ensures predictability, service stability and long term operational alignment.
The use of refrigerated vessels and containers, combined with rigorous control and monitoring protocols, ensures cargo integrity throughout the entire journey, reinforcing the reliability of international logistics.
Logistics as a competitive advantage
At Agrícola Famosa, quality is not limited to the product itself, but also to how it reaches the customer. Every logistics decision is planned to preserve fruit integrity, ensure safety and offer reliability to our partners.
